I had an old Allegro for awhile, bit if a shit box if I remember correctly, also had an old Hillman Imp, engine in the rear, had a lump of concrete in the front to keep the front down so I could go faster, used to go like the clappers, great little car but had to be careful on corners as the concrete would move and the stability of the car was then fucked, thankfully I never came cropper but very close on more than a few occasions.

My dad had an Austin Allegro Equipe - I always thought it was a Vandem Plas and only ust found out when I googled images.

The bird on the bonnet is my mum ;-)

I am ashamed I saw it at the local garage and persuaded him to buy it :-(

Had real problems with the paint, not sure how it was all settled, just remember there were long conversations with Leyland at the time

The 1.6 Maestro was not so quick. The things that convinced him to sell it was putting his foot down in the fast lane of the M25 as a lorry started to pull out into him and the car not doing anything.

He got a 2.8 Granada after that.

Re: Vandem Plas cars
The mg maestro turbo could do 0-60 in under seven seconds and 0-100 in under twenty, pretty rapid, shame about the build quality.

I used to have the MG Montego. It used to go like shit off a stick. It did fall apart though!

my first job was in a market research co who rang owners up after 1,3, 6 months. the bosses of british leyland didn't believe the responses until they were forced to listen to the cassettes of irate customers.

When you think British Leyland were still making the Princess and Maxi when vw were turning out the golf gti and scirocco (and had been for several years by the time the maxi was discontinued) it's no wonder we were a bit of a laughing stock when it come to motor production (Stoat from the odd gem of course).

Haha that's a blast from the past.

Family over the road to me as a kid had an Austin Allegro VDP. Everyone thought it was the nuts at the time. The interior was vastly better than the exterior though. Nice wood and leather trim. It was like sitting in a Colonel's study.

When they sold it the dad had about 8 people round in one day to look at it and we were all outside (things like that in those days were interesting for some reason) and every person that rocked up he went "So, Austin Allegro.............Van Den Plas".

It was all very Alan Partridge.

Even the Metro got the VdP treatment

Fortunately around this time our family car of choice was a rust bucket Fiat Mirafiori estate.

Mrcrowman I have no idea, would be up there I would think as a huge V12 lump, I remember it used to shift when given some welly. I also remember my dad getting frustrated as it was always out of tune and in and out of the Jaguar garage. One time he went to collect it and they said they had to respray the bonnet as one of the young mechanics had accidentally spilt battery acid across the bonnet. It was a dark metallic blue and metallic paint was fairly new then and difficult to match, he was not too happy :-(

It wasn't so comfy probably because it should've had four wheels perhaps.

Cholo, yes it was rather plush back in the day. I can hear Shirley Bassey and Diamonds are forever blearing out the eight track as if yesterday. Although trips down to the coast in Grandads three wheeled Ford Anglia were not so comfy and no radio, still we always managed a sing a long, I do like to be beside the seaside always a favourite.
